Europe’s Largest Anechoic Shielded Chamber Used to Test DA7 Eurofighter Typhoon
The DA7 Eurofighter Typhoon prototype is the first aircraft to enter the new anechoic shielded chamber built by Alenia Aeronautica to test the electromagnetic compatibility of aircraft systems and to measure the performance of emitting devices in the RF frequency range. This new facility, the largest in Europe, is located in the Alenia Ground Test Centre at the Turin-Caselle Airport in Italy. This 900-square-meter building is 20 meters high and boasts an internal volume of 18,000 cubic meters. It is build of zinc-coated steel, wholly covered by approximately 11,000 pyramids of radio-absorbing material to provide highly effective protection against internal or external EMI. A hoist system capable of lifting aircraft weighing up to 25 tons allows testers to irradiate the aircraft from below.
Within the chamber, a mobile antenna positioned with a nine-degree span handles the irradiating antennas. Camera monitors capture both visible and infrared images. A broadband generation system generates RF frequencies, and a fire-suppression system can deliver 11 tons of extinguishing substances within ten seconds. An onsite laboratory has been designed for testing to the most recent EMC standards, and there is another shielded room as well as a reverberating chamber.
