The California town of Walnut Creek is finally installing a new traffic signal “adaptive signal timing system” made up of cameras that use an electromagnetic field to monitor the roadway. The new technology, which is being installed nearly two years after securing the money, is the first in the county that will monitor traffic with cameras and automatically adjust the signals depending on what’s happening on the road. The cameras are replacing vehicle pavement detectors that had been running the signal system.
